Local GPs provide vital advice for cold Christmas
Westminster Local Medical Committee is concerned that the elderly and vulnerable are not forgotten over the Christmas period and are calling for the residents of Westminster to keep a careful eye on those neighbours who may need assistance over the festive period.
Dr Paul O’Reilly chair of Westminster Local Medical Committee, says: ‘Sadly many elderly people do spend much of the festive period on their own. As your family doctors, we ask you, our patients, to keep a friendly eye on your more vulnerable neighbours, during what looks to be one of the coldest Christmas breaks for many years.’
Dr O’Reilly advises all who are ill, or find it difficult to travel, to ensure you have got enough of any medications you may need to see you through to the New Year. However if you do run out of any essential prescriptions, don’t forget pharmacies can dispense emergency supplies without a prescription, providing you can provide evidence that you have had the medication before and that stopping them would be harmful.
‘Practices may be running special opening hours over the festive period and patients are advised to check practice websites or contact practices to check what these are. There will be holiday arrangements to ensure emergency GP care is on hand when local practices are closed and patients can also call NHS Direct on 08454647.’
Dr O’Reilly adds: ‘It is important to remember to keep active within the confines of your home if the weather is too bad to go outside. Make sure you keep warm and have enough provisions for the long break. Don’t be too proud to ask for help from friends and neighbours if needed.’
