Cervical cytology training update

We are aware that some PCTs have tried to insist that all GPs working in their areas undertake either a half day or a full day's update training in taking cervical smears. The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) have been working jointly to address this issue. As a result the Department of Health (DH) wrote to all PCTs on 15 December 2011 confirming that there is no contractual requirement for GPs to have cervical cytology update training.

The DH has now confirmed the GPC’s view that this letter also applies to practice nurses. The GPC’s interpretation that the letter is about the principles which apply to services provided as part of the contract, whether these services are provided by GPs or others employed by practices such as practice nurses has also been confirmed by the DH.
