Preparing for the new HMRC Tax Health Plan - an expert seminar for GPs and practice managers HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has introduced a Tax Health Plan (THP) for health professionals. The THP is the first initiative in a new HMRC campaign focused on professionals. It is designed to assist customers in ensuring that they keep their tax affairs in order. The HMRC is encouraging medical professionals to tell it if they have understated income. Those who contact the HMRC by 31 March 2010 to make a voluntary disclosure will be able to put their tax affairs in order simply and on the best available terms. After that date, using information it holds about how much is paid by health professionals, HMRC will carry out targeted investigations aimed at medical professionals who have not come forward. Substantial penalties or even criminal prosecution could follow for those who have undeclared tax liabilities. Londonwide Enterprise Ltd (LEL) is running a workshop on the afternoon of Wednesday 24 February 2010 to help you to prepare for the new HMRC THP. The workshop will be led by Mr Mark Taylor of Vantis PLC and will cover how the new regulations will affect you, what HMRC is looking out for when they review your finances, how to prepare your disclosure and next steps. |

NHS Pension Scheme Choice seminar Pension Choices - for most it will be a straightforward choice to make. Stay where you are or transfer to the new 2008 Section? It’s a decision that all NHS Pension Scheme 1995 Section members must make over the next three years. The NHS’s ’Pension Choice’ exercise starts this October, prioritising members who are closer to retirement. Whether or not to transfer to the 2008 Section is clearly an important decision, which once made cannot be reversed. However, for most it won’t be too difficult a decision to make, essentially coming down to one key question - at what age do you want to fully retire? This is because the 2008 Section has a normal retirement age of 65 as opposed to 60 in the 1995 Section. Naturally the normal retirement age isn’t the only difference between the two Sections, but it is perhaps the most significant in this instance. There’s a lot of support on the horizon to help you make the right choice, including a Pension Choice Guide from the NHS, which the BMA Pensions Department has recently reviewed and found to be very thorough about the differences between the two Sections. This guide is likely on its own to help you come to your decision. If not, the BMA’s Pensions Department is also running a Pension Choice workshops at BMA House in central London. |

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is the process of discussing and planning ahead in anticipation of some deterioration in a person’s condition. One of the key elements to support people at the end of their lives is to find out what their preferences and wishes are in relation to where and how they would like to be cared for; ACP supports this. Highlighted as one of the most difficult areas for health care professionals, advance care planning can greatly help guide patients, families and professionals in decision making for care at the end of life. This course will aim to teach the value of good communication skills in the context of difficult and often distressing circumstances as well as give candidates an opportunity to see and practise the skills required. |

Nursing homes are not only residents' homes but also the health care facility that deal with all their problems in the first instance. GPs play a crucial role in this, yet their role has rarely been addressed. What do nursing homes want of GPs, what do GPs want of nursing homes, what do residents want of both and what practical means have we got to translate these agendas into reality? We will examine some models which have worked but also provide time for interactice workshops. |

Personalisation – a new value base? Personalisation is an important policy concept in social care, redesigning services so that they allow the greatest possible choice and self-direction for service users and their carers, often through giving them budgets to plan their own care. Or is it just the latest fad? What is important about it and the change it represents? What will it mean for the social care services that palliative care patients receive? Could personalisation in social care be the first step towards budgets in healthcare? Has enough thought been given to the end of life in new social care service and policy developments? |

Practical solutions for difficult asthma Whilst guidelines have helped improve the care of asthma, many patients still present a number of different challenges. In everyday practice, factors such as adherence, co-morbid allergic disease and environmental exposures may all effect how effective recommended treatments are. The last few years have also seen a number of new treatment modalities such as Sublingual Immunotherapy and Anti-IgE become available yet they are still to find their place in treatment. This one day seminar will bring together many of the UK’s leading specialists from both Primary Care and tertiary centres, to provide a practical, cutting edge programme to help ensure you are providing the most up to date management for your patients. This course is suitable for GPs who see patients with asthma. The afternoon will offer a choice of adult or paediatric session. Course fee: £100 (£75 for practice nurses/GP trainees). 15% discount for BSACI members. This course has been accredited with 5.5 points by the RCP. |

Patients with advanced dementia become unable to make choices about their own management, so others have to make decisions for them. In this meeting we will examine how the means we have to ensure these decisions are taken in the patients’ best interests work in practice: the Mental Capacity Act, advance care planning, consultation with relatives and weighing up clinical evidence with the personal factors involved in a situation. We will put all this in the context of the ethical framework for such situations and look at evidence for outcomes of intervention and non-intervention to help ground decision-making in the consequences of those decisions. |

National Association of Primary Care meeting on London regionalisation The challenges facing primary care have, arguably, never been greater and practices in London face very particular challenges both in terms of the restructuring of PCTs and its implications, the formation of supra PCT structures to manage commissioning and contracting and the pace of change with relation to the designation of acute hospitals as hyper acute centres. We clearly all need to work together to manage the transition through this period of change. As a membership organisation, the NAPC (National Association of Primary Care) is keen to offer you the support that you seek. The NAPC is holding a meeting from 1.00pm on Wednesday 29 April 2009 at the De Vere Hotel, High Holborn, London, to discuss the regionalisation in London of NAPC’s membership. The event will be attended by NAPC’s chairman, Dr Johnny Marshall. The Department of Health’s Director General of Commissioning and System Management, Mark Britnell has also been invited. The meeting, which is kindly being supported by an educational grant from Trinity, will discuss the reasons supporting the policy of NAPC’s regionalisation and seek the views of attendees on the arrangement. The meeting is open to all in Greater London, whether NAPC members or not, both individual practices and PBC consortia. NAPC has taken this step as part of its programme of regionalisation throughout the country in a move to draw nearer to its membership and to offer increased and more locally based support. Yorkshire and Humber has become the first NAPC region to be established in England and the NAPC is proposing that London should form its second region. Further details of arrangements for regionalisation will be discussed at the event. |

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is the process of discussing and planning ahead in anticipation of some deterioration in a person’s condition. One of the key elements to support people at the end of their lives is to find out what their preferences and wishes are in relation to where and how they would like to be cared for; ACP supports this. How can we keep our GP services in the NHS Camden 'Keep our NHS Public' would like to invite campaigners from across London to this workshop on Monday 27 October 2008 from 7.00pm. Polyclinics? GP led Health Centres? Integrated Care Centres? The names keep changing, but the thrust from the government for new forms of GP services with the underlying threat of privatisation is relentless. Every area faces these threats. In Camden there have been three surgeries privatised and given to United Health and there is now a battle over proposals for polyclinics and to tender out of hours services. Camden 'Keep our NHS Public' have had to grapple with arguments put by the PCT which all aim to confuse and conceal. There is a lot of experience and expertise in the different campaigns across London and Camden 'Keep our NHS Public' thought it might be useful to have a working session to share experience and ideas about how to counter the arguments and how to campaign successfully. |
