Calling all training practices – make sure your GP trainees are on a performers list

There have been several examples that have come to light recently where GP Trainees have not had their names included on any Performers List. While it is an individual’s responsibility to ensure that they supply all the relevant paperwork to get their name included, there is an obligation on the part of the employer, ie, the training practice where they are working, to check that they have completed the process successfully.

With a new intake of Trainees starting, it is an appropriate time to remind all training practices of the importance of complying with the Performers List Regulations. This allows a two month ‘window’ where the Trainee can work under supervision while their application is being processed. If at the end of that period, their name is still not included, they cannot continue to work and will have to be suspended until the PCT approves the application. This obviously will disrupt their training.

If you have, or are about to take on, a GP Trainee, you must either check that they have completed all the relevant paperwork and the date on which this was submitted to the PCT, or ensure that the paperwork and supporting documentation is submitted as soon as possible. Remember, that the enhanced CRB check alone can take up to six weeks to process. Time is pressing!
