General Practice Nurse Training Programme

March 2010 Londonwide LMCs launched the online General Practice Nurse (GPN) Training Programme. The programme is an essential resource for any nurse new to general practice, as well as a useful refresher generally. It provides introductory level learning resources and self-assessment questionnaires across a range of topics, covering baseline skills for nursing in general practice. It represents the building blocks of an educational pathway to support a career in general practice nursing.

The programme has been written by senior practice nurse educators and is reviewed on an annual basis by experienced practice nurses and academics.

The programme will help to identify learning needs appropriate to the role of a general practice nurse and will direct users to further opportunities for continued professional development.

The programme was professionally accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) in 2012  and received academic accreditation by Middlesex University in 2015, 20 credits at level 6, which can act as a stepping stone into higher education and career development.

The programme is taught by experienced practice nurse educators and students are supported through the programme by course tutors, personal tutors and the Programme Manager. The learning hub contains a forum where students can network and support each other. The GPN Training Programme is a blended learning programme which is composed of 8 online units delivered through a dedicated learning hub, 2 face-to-face taught days which complement the online units, a practice based competency document which gives the students the opportunity to work through tasks under the supervision of an experienced practice nurse. In order for students to obtain the academic credits, they must successfully complete a 4,000-word reflective assignment. Students have between 6 months and 1 year to complete all components.

The 8 online units are:

  • Finding your feet in general practice
  • General treatment room skills
  • Emergency situations
  • Immunisation and vaccinations
  • Long-term conditions
  • Sexual health
  • Mental health
  • Career development
