Cyber security and AI notetaking

  • Latest news

Practices should be aware of new risks create by these tools, how to manage them and the need to be appropriately insured against them.

In January NHS England reported on a study testing AI notetaking technology across nine NHS sites in London, which follows on from the launch of their list of approved ambient voice technology suppliers. By automatically transcribing consultations, the AI scribing tool creates clinical notes for GPs and healthcare workers to consult and review. However, along with the AI revolution comes greater cyber risks.

AI technology can:

  • Require large data sets and may share data across platforms.
  • Lead to Model Inversion Attacks – when sensitive data is extracted. This involves asking the AI model questions that cause it to revel details about the clinical data it was trained on, which may contain patient information.
  • Cause a clinical tool to become a cyber-attack vector if not monitored effectively.

We will share any official guidance on managing these risks as and when we become aware of it.

Practices should also ensure they have appropriate insurance cover in the event the worst does happen.

Londonwide LMCs Buying Group insurance providers MIAB provide cover options for practices using AI ambient scribes.
