As colleagues are aware, we are currently experiencing a high prevalence of seasonal flu in London complicated by the current circulating virus causing patients to have more significant symptoms. Some ICBs across London have sent out alerts to remind colleagues about the use of anti-viral medication for seasonal flu. We would recommend that all teams are familiar with the current advice on the use of these medications.
The high rates of seasonal viruses have also resulted in practices reporting a high demand for on the day appointments for people with flu-like symptoms. Following discussion with community pharmacy representatives, we would remind you that patients considered to be low risk can be referred through the Pharmacy First minor ailment pathway, to be assessed by the community pharmacists as an alternative to providing them with a GP appointment.
