  • Papers covering health committee meetings in June and March, including an Evidence session on End-of-Life Care in London in which Dr Lyndsey Williams, Brent GP and NWL ICB EoL lead talked about:
    • The ICB’s work engaging with different communities to shape EoL and looking beyond statistics.
    • The fact people are living longer with multiple long-term conditions with palliative needs are being identified late, often in the last 90 days of life.
    • Searches of clinical records could identify people earlier and are being tried, but data needs to be used alongside feedback from patients, carers and families.
    • A lot of unmet need is in care homes, rounds with palliative care specialists visiting them are being piloted.
    • Staff in general practice are constantly firefighting which allows little time for development and training, including in EoL.

  • Wanted: a cross-government counterpart to the 10-Year Health Plan [13/6.].
  • Labour’s health mission aims to reform the NHS, invest in prevention, and reduce health inequalities. This blog highlights the need for a cross-government plan to address wider determinants of health, such as income and housing. While the 10-Year Health Plan is expected soon, there is concern that broader cross-government action may be sidelined. Improving health requires addressing root causes, setting ambitious targets, clear contributions from different departments, adequate resources, aligned priorities, and independent monitoring. With an ageing population and high rates of preventable illness, long-term action is urgently needed to improve public health and reduce inequalities.
  • Ambient voice technologies in the NHS: all talk? [10/6].
  • This blog is about using Ambient Voice Technologies (AVTs) in the NHS to reduce staff burnout and administrative tasks. It covers their benefits, challenges, and the need for more evidence and support for effective use.
    • Potential of AVTs: AVTs, also known as digital scribes, can record and convert conversations into patient notes, potentially integrating with electronic patient records and drafting medical documents.
    • Current State and Guidance: The functionality and impact of AVTs are still evolving. NHS England has released guidance on their use, emphasising benefits but also noting the need for more evidence and careful implementation.
    • Challenges and Considerations: Key concerns include data security, patient consent, and the classification of AVTs as medical devices. There is a need for more evidence, capability building, and informed consent from patients.
    • Future Directions: Further support, insight, and evidence are needed for effective adoption. The Health Foundation is funding initiatives to build an AVTs Innovation Community for collaboration and evaluation.
